On Thursday the 14th of October 2010, at Ionad Spòrs Leòdhais, over 90 youngsters from three different age stages joined the Scottish judo expert and former European gold medallist Dr George Kerr, who is only one of seven worldwide to have attained 10th Dan status, and Ultimate Judo coach Gordon McCathie for free 45 minute taster sessions. The event was deemed a great success by all participants and organisers, as Steven Munro, Community Sports Development Officer at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar explained: “We were delighted with how the taster sessions went. The feedback we have received from parents has been extremely positive and we hope that it will encourage a whole new generation to become involved the sport. I would also like to thank Mr Charles Engebretsen for his support on the day. George and Gordon were fantastic with the children and are great role models for the children”. Dr George Kerr, who heads up the Scottish Salmon Company’s Healthy Eating Initiative, commented: "Judo has been my life. It's more than just a sport. There is the whole moral code you need to live by as well – honour, integrity, discipline, politeness, not picking on people who are weaker than you. You have to live up to things such as looking after people." He added: “I am a great believer in the benefits of salmon and eat it regularly. As an athlete, your diet is extremely important and you become very attuned to what does you good and what doesn’t. Even now, although no longer competing and in my 70s, keeping fit in mind and body is no less important. I want kids to understand the importance of eating well and how this links with healthy exercise. But the same goes for people of all ages.” It is hoped that further judo taster sessions will take place in the coming months and that a judo club will be established in due course. Comhairle nan Eilean Siar are grateful for the support received by the Scottish Salmon Company and look forward to working in partnership with them in the future.
