Single generation, single loch, synchronised fallow – A story of success

The Scottish Salmon Company is committed to building a successful Scottish business which respects the surrounding environment, as is evidenced by our 'Single Generation, Single Loch, Synchronised Fallow' strategy at Loch Roag, on Lewis in the Western Isles.

We are the only salmon producer who has successfully implemented this strategy, which our competitors in both Scotland and Norway are replicating.

Our " Single Generation, Single Loch, Synchronised Fallow'" concept aimed to encourage all parties involved - such as landowners,  environmental regulators and non-governmental organisations, Fishermen’s Associations and Western Isles Council - to work together to develop a sustainable plan for the complete loch system.

After taking control of the majority of salmon farm consents in Loch Roag, The Scottish Salmon Company moved its sites into deeper water, further from wild salmon runs and rivers and the surrounding coastlines, minimising our impact on both the surrounding environment and vista. In implementing an Area Management Agreement, The Scottish Salmon Company has a 'total control' management strategy, which includes stocking with single class year fish, operating an all-in all-out policy, strategic and synchronised medicinal treatments and synchronised harvesting and fallowing periods.

The Scottish Salmon Company also implemented an extended fallow period - up to a year for certain sites - before the 2009 stocking and a fallowing of the whole loch system for a 12 week period. During this time, there was no production on any salmon farm site within Loch Roag for the first time in 25 years, highlighting our commitment to implementing initiatives that will protect and support the environment.

Since restocking Loch Roag, this strategy has proven highly effective, with virtually no lice in the loch. Our work at Loch Roag is now considered a model for the rest of West Scotland and the Northern Isles and the success of this strategy has been recognised as an example of good practice, winning the Crown Estate Award for Stewardship in 2009.
