Career profile

Site Development

Are you passionate about the environment? An animal lover? Committed to sustainability? Perhaps a job in Site Development or Biology would suit you. Stuart scoured the seas for the perfect job and ended up finding a career just down the road.

Describe a normal day in your job

I work in the Site Development Department which means I’m now based in our Head Office in Edinburgh though my job takes me all over Scotland. My main role is to ensure all farming consents are in place and up to date as well as completing planning applications for existing and new site developments.

What skills/qualifications are relevant to your role?

In my role you typically need a degree but I’ve been able to work my way up without one.  The Scottish Salmon Company has given me the opportunity to go back to study which is already helping my career.

What has been your career path to your current role and what experience do you have?

When I left school I wanted to join the Merchant Navy to work at sea.  I spent a couple of years studying and working in different places before I even thought about salmon farming.  I travelled around the world looking for work and ended up finding a career just down the road!

What further training/ courses have you completed or are completing?

I have completed an SVQ and Modern Apprenticeship Level 3 in Aquaculture. This enabled me to win a nomination for Aquaculture Learner of the Year, a great achievement and boost for my career which has lead me into further learning! I have recently completed a Diploma in Oceanography and look forward to my next challenge.

Stuart, Environmental Data Planner

What is the best thing about your job?

I like the diversity. Every day brings a new challenge and no two days are the same. I enjoy problem solving and use the experience I have gained to meet new challenges head on.

What interested you in a career in Aquaculture?

The thing that excites me about the Aquaculture industry is its integration into small communities and its potential for growth. I enjoy being part of an industry which benefits the community I grew up in.

Why would you encourage others to think about a career in Aquaculture?

The Scottish Salmon Company wants passionate people.  All you have to do is show willingness and enthusiasm and you can succeed.
