Are you an animal lover? Outdoorsy? Practical? Perhaps a job in Marine or Freshwater would suit you. Donnie loves to be able to think on his feet and feel challenged.
I am responsible for caring for our fish in the loch, making sure they are fed properly and that they are happy and healthy. We are out on the loch every day but we also use technology such as underwater CCTV to make sure all is well under the surface. I also manage the regional net washing team who work across our sites in Arran, Loch Fyne and Loch Striven. I take pride in ensuring that we are taking care of our loch environment as well as our salmon.
Maths, Chemistry, Biology and English are all helpful but above all else good common sense is an essential skill.
I started working in Aquaculture when I was 19 because one of my friends told me it would be challenging and interesting. Working on marine sites was a complete change for me but being able to work outdoors and being out on the boats was, and still is, a real thrill. My colleagues have helped me progress through various roles to become Marine Area Manager at Loch Fyne.
"I have achieved more than I ever thought I would"
The challenge! I like to be able to think on my feet as every day is a new challenge.
The industry changes and progresses so quickly. The way in which we farm today is totally different to how we farmed 10 years ago as a result of the advances in science and technology.
There’s a skill to fish farming which, with the right support and training, can become a vocation. There’s plenty of opportunities available. I have achieved more than I ever thought I would by being interested and keen to learn.
